NAVI MUMBAI SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NMSF) in association with Shree Gujarati Samaj and Maharashtra Academy of Sciences conducted a two day Science Utsav on 1st and 2nd of Feb. 2014 at Gujarat Bhavan Vashi. On the first day (February 1), a teachers' conference was organised, where teachers from Navi Mumbai, educationists from Homi Bhabha Science Education Centre (HBCSE) and students of teacher training school participated and discussed 'demonstration of science experiments in high schools.'
The inaugural address was delivered by Dr S Kailas, former director of physics group, BARC, who explained to the teachers the avenues that are available today for young scientists. Professor Chitra Natarajan, dean, HBCSE, in her keynote address, explained effective methods of demonstrating science experiments to young minds and described the avoidable pitfalls. The day also saw four lectures and demonstrations and 10 teachers reading their essays.
The meeting concluded with a positive note on further interactions to enhance the methods of teaching.
The second day (February 2), dedicated to students, was made successful by about 30 projects (90 students) from Navi Mumbai Municipal School (NMMS) students and an equal number from the aided and unaided private schools. In this open to public event, students enthusiastically explained their experiments to the visitors.
Inaugurated by Shri Raju (Vikram) Shinde, a member of NMMC, the eventful day was honoured by prominent visitors, mayor Sagar Naik and Vaibhav Gaikwad, a member of NMMC. Prominent institutes like Bombay Natural History Society, Origami Thane, HBCSE, demonstrated various scientific activities.
The experiments presented by students included all the subjects of science from mathematics to biology. Students were excited to describe what they have done in demonstrating scientific quantities.
